Mar Gregorios Orthodox Christian Student Movement

MGOCSM, the 1st Spiritual sapling for students in Asia, is the spiritual organization of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church for its Student Community.


Malankara Orthodox Church has witnessed the spiritual progress of lots of young stars through the efforts of Mar Gregorios Orthodox Christian Students Movement (MGOCSM). The laudable initiative for the Senior Leaders and students of our Church, in Madras, in the early part of the 20th century. The organization was founded on the basis of intense yearning for true spiritual progress for the youth along with an ardent spirit of Christian fellowship. The Organization was formed in 1907 as Syrian Student Conference. The first conference of the Movement was held at Madras on the 1st of January 1908.

The Movement had progressed and flourished from 1912 to 1960 with a new vigour as St. Thomas Syrian Student's Movement. The present title of MGOCSM was conferred in the year 1960 and henceforth it has remained the icon and symbol of united Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. MGOCSM has incorporated within, two student organizations of Malankara Church, namely, St. Thomas Syrian Student's Movement and Mar Gregorios Syrian Student's Association.


"The Movement encourages the spirit of worship and train the youth of the Church in private prayer as well as in corporate worship and shall endeavour to interpret the meaning of the liturgy and other forms of worship, by inculcating the habit of regular attendance at the Holy Qurbana and arranging retreats and special days of prayer".


"The Movement organises study groups, lecture series, seminars, symposia and regional and annual conferences for the study of the Bible, the faith of the Church and social concerns."


The Movement shall endeavor: -To render financial help to the poor and deserving by raising funds and shall minister to the sick and provide medical care and bear witness to the Lordship of Christ in every aspect of life and to help the spread of the Gospel.

For MGOCSM, service essentially mean service to the needs of fellow students. Giving educational scholarship is the most important service MGOCSM can and does perform. In fact, during the centenary celebration MGOCSM has taken up this work in a massive manner in the Centenary project "Total Education for one hundred students.


MGOCSM History

The students and senior leaders of the Church who were residing in Madras in the early part of the last century felt the need for an organization to bring together Christian students in various colleges and high schools with a view to deepening their spiritual life and to create in them a lively sense of fellowship. The Syrian Student Conference, the parent organization was formed in 1907 and the first conference was convened on 1–3 January 1908 at Balikamadom School, Tiruvalla, Kerala. Annual Conferences have been a regular feature since 1908. From 1912 to 1960 it was called St Thomas Syrian Students Movement. The Movement assumed the present name MGOCSM in 1960, with its motto is Worship, Study, Service, after its merger with MGSSA (Mar Gregorios Syrian Students' Association), then the students wing of Jacobite Church. And in 1972 it had a split forming SOSMI (Syrian Orthodox Students Movement of India), the Student wing of Jacobite Church which was later renamed as JASSMI (Jacobite Syrian Students Movement of India) in 2002 and then as Mor Gregorios Jacobite Students' Movement (MGJSM) in 2009.

The strength of the Movement is the wide network of its units centered in educational institutions and major parishes spread all over India and outside. MGOCSM has been maintaining inter-disciplinary contacts in the academic field for a long time by the formation of its wings. They include the High School, Higher Secondary, College students' wings, University, Higher Secondary, High School teachers' associations, Medical Auxiliary, Technical Auxiliary, Missionary Forum, Literary Forum, and the Publication wing.

Since the initiation, MGOCSM has attained tremendous growth and vitality by the grace of God, under the able guidance and nourishment of our Spiritual Leaders. Every year Annual Conference are held, generally in Prime locations of Orthodox Church, attracting lots of students who are enriched by the edifying speeches, dialogues and discourses in the spiritual ambience.

The 1st Annual Conference of the full-fledged MGOCSM was convened on the 1stof January 1908 at Thiruvalla in Kerala.

The year 1969 (May 21-25) witnessed the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of MGOCSM at Baselios College, Kottayam.

Orthodox Theological Seminary of Kottayam became the spiritual locale for the platinum Jubilee Celebrations in 1984.

2008 became the years for the grand centenary celebrations of MGOCSM. Various programmes were conducted by the Movement at different significant places of Orthodox Church during this year. The centenary conference at Parumala Seminary, during December (26-31), 2008 brought a befitting finale for the events.

A constitution was formulated for the effective functioning of MGOCSM during the period 1915-1917. Amendments were made in 1955, 1968, 1975 and 2015. The constitution was amended recently on the 11th of July, 2015 at the General Assembly and approved by the Holy Episcopal Synod, in the month of August (3-7) 2015.

MGOCSM takes special care of students deprived of opportunities in the lowest ebb of the society. Educational scholarship programmmes are intended for their benefit. MGOCSM, student Centres at Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram, Aluva, Manipal and Davangere (Karnataka) are the edifices of the untiring labour and dauntless spirit of the members of MGOCSM during the past meaningful years.
